Broken PS Audio Prelude Banana Connectors
« on: March 21, 2012, 08:24:39 AM »
I'm trying to replace these broken banana connectors off my PS Audio Prelude speaker cables. They're pretty crappy pot metal for such expensive cables....

They screw onto the end of the connector & I haven't been able to find a suitable replacement online.  Any ideas?

Also, does anyone know how to get broken bananas out of the binding posts?

Are they stuck in the binding posts of your amp or speakers?  I'm sure Tom or Anders might have a suggestion.

It's not surprising at all that they would use garbage connectors on high end cables.  Anything to make a buck.  Most of the connectors are from China.  In my research I found several cable companies that ship distributors the parts and have them do the assembly to get a price break.  So some kid making minimum wage is in the back of their warehouse putting together your $1000 cables.  There goes your QA...

The bananas are stuck in the speaker binding posts.  I was able to back them out SOME through the hole where you clamp speaker wire, but not enough to get hold of them & pull them out.

Did you try to remove the 8 phillips screws from the back plate of the speaker and see if you could "push" the broken banana plug back?  I would check if you have access...  If so, would be easiest fix...  If not take a few more pics, to see if we have more ideas...

That's the first thing I tried; It's not that easy.  Look at the back of the binding posts:

Based on what I see...  If the plastic cover (9:02 AM post) of the binding posts are not able to be removed to give access to broken banana plugs...

I would CAREFULLY drill a small (1/8" or smaller) hole in back of existing binding post, and then get a coat hanger or such and push the broken banana plug back out of binding post.  Then add a dab or two of silicon to seal the drilled hole...

Not recommending YOU do that, but if it were me based on what I see, that's my plan!   ;)

I think I'm going to dab a little super glue on the end of a toothpick & see if I can't get the old bananas out that way~

That still doesn't solve the problem of where to get a replacement....PS Audio doesn't make them anymore.

If I understand you correctly, that would be extremely difficult as the back is SOLID all the way through to the end of the banana hole:

OK...  10:16 AM post gives More info!   :)  Stop withholding evidence!   ;)  Abort drilling the binding post option!!!   :o

Try the toothpick/"SUPER GLUE GEL" option (super glue is useless)...

But if that fails...  PM me your phone number and I'll call as I have a few other ideas, but would take too long to explain here...

Hope super glue gel works,
George

If it were me, I would just replace all the terminals.
Replacements would be a cheap upgrade in most cases.
Parts Express, DIY Cable.com, Whatever Tom has laying around...........

Greetings Gary!

At least take them out of the plate so you can work on them.  Your only option might be to replace the binding posts.  Monster makes some really nice banana replacements that are available at Radio Shack that are big enough for the PS Audio cables.

If you want to get the best binding posts, Soniccraft has both Vampire and Cardas.

Good luck!
Carl
