Stereo Repair Shops / Techs Of The Burgh

 I thought it might be helpful to start a thread of all the stereo repair shops and Techs in the burgh. It might also be helpful if we can list any feedback or personal experience with specific techs or shops.
 The only shop I have any experience with is Atlas Electronics on Liberty Ave. in Bloomfield. I had a Pioneer SA-9100 that powered up in protect mode and they were able to get it up and running. Cant say it was cheap, but I didn't expect it to be. I now have another problem with my 9100 and am considering taking it back to them.

I too have a 9100 that had to make two trips to Atlas Audio Repair.  Honestly I didn't use it much after the first repair.  Both times it had loud static in the tone controls for one channel only.  You could bypass the tone controls and the noise went away.  I've had Atlas repair a bunch of stuff and it usually is not inexpensive (though, maybe it is not supposed to be).

I've heard Donny at Phil's TV Service in Pittsburgh is good.

I would not use The Stereo Shop in Greensburg again.  Last time I carried something to them, they didn't really even have a technician qualified to fix anything electronic (or at least that was my conclusion afterwards).

Asked OCCD about repair work recently, he was covered up with repairing his own stuff.

I hear good things about this Phil's. But, I have no personal dealings with them.
I do not have good experience with Atlas.

 The one thing that I did not like about Atlas was that they had a policy that stated that if you don't pick up your repair item within 30 days that they keep it. What bothers me about this is the fact that they never called me to say that my repair was complete. This made me feel that they might have been trying to pull a fast one.

  I have static on the right channel of my 9100 and will be looking into getting it repaired after the new year. It sounds like Phil's may be the place to go.

I dealt with phil on my sansui au710 and it took him a month and a half to barely get my amp functional and cost me $175(bad cap). I've had my NAD t763 at progressive for 7+ months and just recently has he singled out the issue. Progressive is the only authorized nad guy in town and I plan to go to him again. The issue with my receiver is a tough one and he (slowly) got it figured out.

Hey I know this thread is old, but I have info to add.

I know that Vintage Hifi now has an extremely experienced tech on hand now!  I am biased of course, but there are not many around with the years of experience and skill Anders has, and still fewer with the same passion for audio.  You won't find better anywhere.

From our experience, there seem to be people out there in business, making a decent living off the backs of their talent.  They don't appreciate audio, their customers or the skill of their techs.  They appreciate the dollar, and all else be damned (literally).  This is often why (at least one) of the aforementioned repair businesses quality of work is very inconsistent, or nonexistent.

I feel he is in a place where his talent and passion will be greatly appreciated.

From what I have been seeing and hearing on what is being repaired out of VHF, I would say the same thing.  Great resource for vintage equipment!

 I took my son's Luxman R-1120 receiver to the stereo shop with one channel not working. I marked the screws with line up dots before hand. I got it back a week later they charged me to say that they couldn't fix and that it was "not worth fixing". The dots were still perfectly aligned. I had it repaired somewhere on liberty ave- can't remember exactly but its kick ass to this day.

 Tom and Anders did a great repair on a tough problem with distortion in my Carver 490T -it plays and sounds excellent now! Don at Phil's was very good with all my Dynaco stuff - diagnosing problems and fixing them for a reasonable cost on the spot. Those were Dynaco St-70s, ST-35s and PAS 3s.
I would say, "Take It To TOM's Shop!" (TITTS)  now that he has Anders. They are great trouble shooters.
That's my 2 dollars worth (used to be 2 cents before the TARPS and QE2)

The only problem with taking things to Tom and Anders is the fact that you end up spending most of the day at the shop! 

I appreciate the tidbits that I've picked up off of Tom and Anders while hanging around the shop when these guys are in repair mode.

I have had some good experience with repair/restoration around here.

Don at Phil's fixed a custom built amp that had a noisy channel without a schematic on hand.  I always enjoy my visits and chatting with Don.  Don is a great guy. 

Ryan Inman with Hot Glass Audio did superb restorations on a Scott LK-48 and a Scott LK-150 (the one that got away...sigh).  Last time I talked to him he seemed burnt out and disinterested in doing any work.  i don't know where or how he learned so much about Scott equipment.  He knows Scotts really well.

Very pleased to hear there is another option (Vintage Hifi) in the Burgh and all the good words.
