WTB: 12 KT-120s
« on: February 23, 2013, 09:41:20 AM »
I have 12 Valve Art KT-88s with a hundred hours or so on them that I need to sell or trade plus cash for 12 KT-120s.  If you can help, PM me.

Tom: If you have access to a dealer-cost source of KT-120s (yes,  for the Bob amps) please PM your buddy Pepe.   :)

Why are you deciding to go with 120's?

Cheapest ones i've seen online are through Tube Depot = $45 a piece w/ free shipping

I've read that a lot of folks that do change to the higher power tubes go back.
IN REALITY IT ONLY MATTERS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE TO YOU!!!!!

Interesting observations.  I am looking to juice teh additional 60 watts (per channel) from the 305s to help them deal  with the big room.  Sounds like it may not be a recommended move.

I was running the KT88z Black Beauties  in my set of Cherry 180's
I changed them to KT120's and loved the result, went from 180 wpc to 260 wpc.
When I sold my Cherry's to Tinpan he told me that he was going to remove the KT120's and go back to the KT88's
After receiving the amp's and listing to the KT120's he decided to stay with the KT120's

I like the sound of the KT120's I ended up purchasing 30 of them for my set of Silver Sevens approx. 700 wpc
Its 105 watts per channel increase in your set of VTA305's not 60 watts, running the KT88's in a 305 amp
gives you around 200 watts per channel.

I think Tom was guessing that running KT-88's and 305's was giving us around 240wpc.  You have to take into account that Brian had 180's and moved to KT-120's.  I value Brian's opinion but I'd ask someone who has 305's that moved  back and forth between those two tubes.

Put it this way, if it was a choice of spending your money between a set of KT-120's and those subs, i'd pick the KT-120's.

I like them both.  However, 88's are beautiful all lit up!

So 500+ bucks for 30 watts.  Would be very hard to notice that tiny extra headroom,  it seems to me.  The decision to go 120 would need to be made based on the sound of the KT-120s vs 88s.  I hear some people describe the 120s as having a better midrange,  but that is written on a different context (not the 305).  And then you can find testimony supporting the 88 sounds better from others.  This is not enough to justify blowing that ind of money.   I will wait to see if I can get my hands of a sextet of KT120s to test the sound against the 88s before pulling any triggers.

Thanks!
