Cassettes Cassettes Cassettes Cassettes
« on: April 14, 2013, 03:25:50 PM »
Klaus had errands to run in Ohio and was kind enough to pick up a litter of cassette decks for me - thank you Klaus!  He was able to fit 22 decks (21 for me,  1 for him) into his RX-300.

Now to have some fun testing these babies so I can decide which stay and which go to Epay.

Thanks again MacGeek!

PS:  The original idea was to get Nak decks only,  but the seller had a Pioneer CT-F950 dressed up in a wood case,  and I could not resist the fluoroscan temptation.   >:D

Holy Motherload!!
I am confident that an SL-1200 is capable of outperforming turntables of much higher expense with minor modification.

Looks like a good number of these will need some degree of maintenance to get them to record properly.

I have a masochistic streak  ???.

The MR decks seem to be the hardiest.  There is a 202 deck in the collection that flips the cassette by itselt robotically.   Having a stone IPA to help me absorb the challenge ahead.

Pepe, what's wrong with you?  But, I do appreciate ridiculousness of it.

The road trip worked out to about 15 miles per deck.  There was more to buy-I could have managed better mileage/unit.

Suppose you pulled the best parts from each deck and made one really stellar example.   What would you do with it?   Cassette is one example (IMHO) of a media best left to the trash heap of history.

Pepe, I think those marathon corporate meeting sessions have taken their toll. :p

@Nick - many, many things are wrong,  but I enjoy playing with this old stuff and selling it on.

@Al - time will tell if I break even of lose or double the initial outlay,  will keep you posted.  My bet is yes,  given the price I paid.

@Mark - they all work in playback pretty much,  and there are 7 that record supremely well including the MR decks - those are nice).  The fun  of recording is in the ritual of doing it and in being able to move vinyl to tape easily for listening in the car.   I know you will say "cars don't have cassette decks anymore"  - but that is a separate project,  getting an old muscle car built around a decent cassette deck.

@Anders:  yes I am.  MAy need your help resuscitating some of these babies.

I used to love listening to cassettes in the car, but I always tended to leave them in the car, where they got hot..stretched out, and unplayable after a time.  The only time I really enjoy CDs now is in the car.  If I could play vinyl on the move, I'd prolly go for that :)

Actually, the stock system in my 2002 Windstar has cassette and CD.   It just never occurred to me to make a cassette when burning a CD is quicker. cheaper and easier.   The on;t time I use the cassette is with one of those adapters and a portable DVD player.
