Improving Phono Stage Marantz 2245
« on: April 18, 2013, 11:29:27 PM »
I recently purchased a Denon tuntable to go with my Marantz 2245.  The Marantz was in the shop for refurb and I was running the TT on a 90s sony.  The lp sound quality on the 90s Sony seems better than the marantz phono stage.  I am considering an outboard phone stage or modifying the Marantz 2245 phono stage. I dont want to spend over 250.  Any suggestions.

If your 90s Sony sounded better than your 2245, I would STRONGLY suspect you've got some bad caps (at least) in the Marantz.   I don't think this is a modification issue, but rather a repair one.

I have a 2230 and the phono stage is terrific.

The Marantz sounds phenominal through the aux input (CD). It is only the phono input via that doesnt sound as good.  The guys at the shop just went through it and replace all bad caps. What type of TT and cart are you running?

Phono and CD stages are different circuits.   I didn't know that the guys had just serviced it.   I have a JVC QL-A7 with an AT 440 mLa.   I could send you a link to some drops I've made with this setup so you can hear how it is working for me.

Agree w M - some people get receivers like that Marantz just to use their phono stage,  it should sound really good.  Have you tried a different cart to make sure that is not the issue?   The 2230 does not do MC but that AT is MM so it should work fine.

I published my list on the other thread.   I thought it was safer there.   I also PM'd this guy because he is new and I didn't know if he could see that one.
