Hi from No. California
« on: January 06, 2016, 11:16:47 PM »
Hi,

Quick introduction. Happy to be here! Vintage enthusiast as you can see from my signature. Spent many years buying the latest & greatest, but never hearing what I really enjoyed when I first started collecting records over 40 years ago. Slowly but surely sold off what I didn't like, and adding pieces to the point that I am very happy with my current set up.

Here's a few pictures of some of the gear and collection. Looking forward to participating and hopefully adding a few words of value.

Welcome S.   California PA or the state of California?   If the latter, how did you hear about us?

That would be the State. Northern California, specifically the Bay Area.

Heard about you simply by doing a search for some information. I don't know how I haven't run across this forum before. I'm a long time enthusiast, and have been a long time member of most of the well known audio forums. Thought I knew them all(at least the English speaking ones) but I guess not.

Welcome. Impressive collection there. Here's a typical east coaster question for you, is it safe to have equipment and records up that high in case of an earthquake? I used to travel to a home office in SF, no one there seemed to have a care in the world about earthquakes.

The forum now shows up when doing google searches, noticed it after one of the recent updates.

Thanks guys!

Yes I love the Wharfedales. They were restored recently with Russian oil caps, and sound incredible. I use them when I rotate in my tube gear, which doesn't play so nicely with the AR 3's.

Short answer(and I'm originally from the Boston area so I understand the question): No. Not terribly smart. But I'm storage is tight, unless I want to start carting stuff out to the garage, where I already keep some stuff. So I will take my chances and hope that we don't see the huge one that is most likely coming sooner rather than later. We've been though a number of small shakers in the 18 years we've been in the house and things haven't been disrupted. It's a 1939 house with a great foundation, and it's been through many quakes including the '89 and is still standing. So I'm hoping luck and positive thinking will get me through the smaller ones, and if and when a big one hits, my gear/records probably won't be first on my mind.

I went to Boston Conservatory and lived in various parts of the North Shore for six years or so.   Lovely area.

Between the NE Conservatory of Music(I'm guessing that's what you mean), Berklee School of Music, plus all the local colleges and clubs(not as thriving as in days past, but still a component) the city has a the music scene pretty well covered.

Nope, not what I mean.   Boston has two Conservatories.   NE is by Symphony Hall and Boston is on The Fenway.

NE is big on string players, Boston has strong Theater and Dance departments, and they share an opera department (that was my major).

Got it. Wasn't aware of the BC. It's only been around since 1867 how could I know about it?

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good vintage gear here and some vintage members! Interestingly I sold most of the gear you have working as an Audio salesmen during high school. Some good stuff there.

Whadya mean "some"?:)

I owned some of that gear in high school and college in the mid/late 70's(well, the models, not the actual piece), which is what I was striving for when I started to put the system together. In this case, going backwards was the right step for me.
