Help!!!, no bass out of my right speaker
« on: June 25, 2010, 08:49:28 PM »
I hooked my new/score Sansui 7000 about an hour or so ago to my Polk Audio Monitors 5 Jr's + Series 2 and I noticed that there is no bass coming out of the right speaker while playing CD's. I played around with the connections and alas nothing. I then unplugged everything and hooked up my Luxman R-341 the way it had been set up prior to Sansui and again no bass out of the right speaker.

Did I do something wrong? did inadvertently blow something on the right speaker? :-[

All I can say is since it is not the receiver gently push in on the woofer cone, and see if it moves. If not the woofer is seized. So if it does not move you will need a new woofer. If it is not seized then pull out the woofer and check the connections.

About the only thing that would cause a cone to seize up instantly as you're describing is in line with what Mikey is saying. About the only scenario that I can conjure up is that of the adhesive binding the windings of the coil somehow failed. Perhaps it was the humidity? Thermal expansion? Instant exposure to high current? Who knows.

Perhaps the Sansui has a short in it, and it sent high current to the low frequency units on that channel? Highly unlikely, but, not entirely impossible, right?

DC current out of the outputs will seize a woofer fast. If the woofer is seized, do NOT use the receiver that blew it out...

Or.......

Did you move the speaker(s) in question? Perhaps the wiring or internal electronics have been compromised. A loose spade terminal might have popped off? It's worth opening them up and investigating.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that part. You'd better give that Sansui to me. I'll figure out what to do with it! :)

In all honesty, if you have a multimeter, it's time to start playing.

I unscrewed the mid range and the woofer and everything seems to be fine Ie nothing is loose. I have no idea what a multimeter is so I'm just going to have Tom take a look it as I'm prone to screw something up. As for the Sansui I'll think about it Tom just worked on it and it's in good working order. I still have a SX-980 i'm trying to get rid of.

Did you "test" the woofer?  Does the woofer driver produce sound?  You said "everything seems fine."  What does that mean?

If you live out east (Penn Hills/Monroeville) I'll gladly test the woofer for you...

Try switching right and left speakers and see if the problem still exists but in different speakers. This will determine if it's the speaker or the channel.  ;)
IN REALITY IT ONLY MATTERS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE TO YOU!!!!!

I did that and I now think it's the right channel, still can't figure it out.

Make sure your I/C cables are good. Re-check all connections.
