Web server troubles
« on: October 12, 2010, 07:49:20 AM »
We are aware that the site has been failing to load.
I have opened a trouble ticket with our webhost.

Sorry Guys, I'll let you know the outcome.

Still getting the runaround.
I've shown them that the problem is on their end, but they refuse to acknowledge it.

They claim that the webpages are at fault, they are taking too long to load (45 secs)
and as a result they are being killed by them. I told them that the page loads are failing immediately,
not delaying for long periods and then failing.
I am sure this is what you notice too; you click on a link and *poof*

Sigh.
Anyways, I wrote a script to show them just that. I can't wait to see what they say next.

Out of 50 simulated page loads, it was killed 4 times. In that same test, no page load took more than 3 seconds to complete.

I do not see it as bad from over here.  When it happens a quick hit to the refresh button fixes it.  The web site is quirky,  like vintage hifi equipment,  so it fits.   :D

Sigh. Our webhost continues to disappoint.
They acknowledged the problem is on their end, but stated that they don't know what is wrong or how to fix it.

So instead, they offered to move the sites to a different server.
I asked them if they tested the other servers to verify that they are not exhibiting the same issue as the one we are on now. No point in moving if they are all broken.

I'm waiting for a response.

I am not optimistic that the other servers are not affected. My guess is that they made a change recently that is causing this, and it was likely applied to all their servers in their farm, not just this one.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your patience

I finally made it through enough red tape to make progress on this.
A lead server engineer looked at the server more closely and found an issue
which he reports has been corrected.

I'll be monitoring the server for the next few days to confirm. Keeping my fingers crossed.
