Looking to get a LCD HD TV... Opinions???
« on: October 12, 2010, 09:50:56 AM »
Greetings all...  Looking to replace my 32" CRT JVC TV...

I have a projector in my basement, so NOT looking for recomendations that way...

Looking to get LCD for my living room...  Cost "IS" a factor...  Looking for a 46" as my room is fairly small...  So far, leaning toward a Samsung...

**Possibly willing to purchase a "used" one if it is at least 40" and in good shape and a GOOD price!   ;)  Any one have an LCD TV for sale???  ;D

Thanks for your input...
George

If I were going to buy a TV I would be looking a Plasma and not LCD.  Plasma IMO has better color quality, better refresh and much better watching fast moving action films or sports.  From what I have read, you need to buy a LED back lit LCD to get the same picture quality as a Plasma.  Plus the Plasma are less than the standard LCD right now.

One issue you may run into with a plasma is glare. I have a new 50" samsung plasma in my living room and even with all the strides that have been made to eliminate glare, it's still there. LCD uses a plastic screen and has a brighter picture which does a pretty good job of eliminating glare. If you don't have many windows in your living room I would definitely go plasma since it does have a much better picture and costs less.
I am confident that an SL-1200 is capable of outperforming turntables of much higher expense with minor modification.

I would look at some of the T.Vs at Walmart. They have some pretty good deals know that the led T.V came out. Just be careful if you buy a plasma because if you play games or anything like that it can burn in to the screen if it setting on for about 30 minutes unplayed and games like Mercenaries 2 that have meters at the bottom of the screen all the time get etched in. Hopefully this helps aid in your decision.

I have a 10th generation Panasonic plasma. No worries and great picture. I agree with Huffman, plasma appears clearer than LCD.

I've had both (32" Sharp Aquos LCD and 42" Panasonic plasma).  Plasma has a better picture, but also has the shiny screen glare problem and is not as bright as LCD.  If I was in the market for a new +40" screen, I'd probably go LCD.  They are both good pictures if you buy a good model (check out Consumer Reports), but I immediately noticed the screen glare and lower brightness the day the new Plasma was installed.

...If I remember correctly there was 3 brightness settings on my plasma. I had to use the middle one because the bright one hurt my eyes to look at too long.  8)

a couple things in my opinion. first, contrast ratio, the higher the better the picture will look from white to black. second, refresh rate, the higher the better. with a high refresh rate like 120hz the action is smother and not choppy. finally, resolution, 1080p (progressive) is the highest but if the signal you are putting through it is of a lesser resolution the picture degrades if the tv does not have up-conversion technology. example is regular definition tv which is about 480i (interlaced) may look worse on a higher definition tv without the upconversion as opposed to a 720p hd tv which is closer to the actual resolution. if you are not shelling out for a blue ray player and are just watching dvd's and hd tv then 720p may be your route. if you got blue ray and all hd channels then 1080 may be ur route. if u want the top of the line then 1080. also the best picture now is from LED tv's. they dont burn in pictures like plasma, they dont burn out in 5 years like plasma, they offer better contrast/refresh rate than lcd, and over all they are brighter. for instance u can get a 55" 240hz 1080p LED tv for around $3k. Smaller sizes cost less. Also consider the new stuff, 3D ready. These are cool but more expensive due to glasses r needed, adapters, emitters, and over all accessory overload.  Lcd is most affordable, dlp is thicker tv set dimensions, plasmas are expensive and have issues, led is the best in my opinion.

Oh, also i saw a 40" samsung LED 120hz 1080p tv for $999 on newegg.com with $19.99 shipping.

Just for comparison. I got my dad a samsung and he is thrilled with it. I am thinking of getting this one I just mentioned. Excellent picture. Oh and in lcd's bigger screen try to get higher refresh rate. Hope this helps
